The scooped body catches water on the fall, and that is the entire design intent. Instead of dropping straight, the jig kicks sideways and flutters down like a dying baitfish — the single most reliable trigger there is for a fish that is holding on structure and not actively chasing.

This is why slow pitch works on grouper and mangrove snapper when nothing else moves them. You are not calling fish in from a distance; you are putting something wounded directly in front of a fish that has already decided not to swim far, and letting the fall do the convincing. Most bites come on the drop, so fish with a semi-slack line and stay in contact.

Better suited to moderate depth and lighter current than a hydro jig — in heavy drift the flutter works against you.
